Dr. Stepien is a Regional Pediatric Hospitalist for Seattle Children’s Hospital, working at Virginia Mason Memorial in Yakima, WA. She is the founding director of The Institute for Physician Wellness ( and has a particular interest in self-compassion and mindfulness in medicine. She teaches workshops and leads retreats in support of physician wellness. She attended medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital/Marshfield Clinic in 2011. She holds a Master's degree in Philosophy and practiced physical therapy for 13 years prior to entering medicine. Dr. Stepien has published research and essays in the medical literature as well as in the popular press. She is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post.
