Congratulations to Dr. Abena Akomeah for receiving one of the EMRA ACEP16 Travel Scholarships!  Each spring several scholarships are provided to help EMRA student and resident members travel to attend the events at ACEP’s annual meeting.

Dr. Akomeah was born in Ghana, West Africa and immigrated to America at age 14. Her exposure to the health care field began with playing doctor in a small pharmacy owned by her mother in Ghana. Her first health care job was a certified nursing assistant in high school. Graduating from George Washington University School of Medicine she pursued emergency medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) where she is currently a third year resident.

Dr. Akomeah is interested in increasing the number of under-represented minorities in emergency medicine. She spearheaded the creation of a diversity elective at CMC and is involved in other diversity and inclusion initiatives there. She’s a mentor to medical students through EMRA. She currently serves as co-chair of the EMRA education subcommittee, conference education. She aspires to pursue interests in medical education, emergency medicine residency education and program development, particularly in developing countries.

Congratulations to Dr. Akomeah!
