Congratulations to Susi Vassallo MD, FACEP, FACMT on her promotion from Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine to Professor of Emergency Medicine.  She is the first and only woman to achieve full professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at New York University.

Dr. Vassallo completed her residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital-Wayne State University after which she joined NYU School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital Center in 1987 as a Medical Toxicology Fellow.  She currently serves as Clinical Professor at the Ronald O. Pearlman Department of Emergency Medicine.

Celebrated as an expert in Thermoregulation/Hypothermia Medical Toxicology, Dr. Vassallo has been recognized by the ACLU’s National Prison Project.  Her work has helped to transform human rights within Riker’s Island, the Department of Homeland Security, and the New York State penal system.  Amongst her many advisory roles, Dr. Vassallo serves as Secretary on NYU Medical Center and School of Medicine’s Executive Council and Academic Affairs Committee.  She also acts as the Physician Advisor for Care and Case Management for Adult Emergency Services at Bellevue Hospital.  Dr. Vassallo was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2002 and, again, in 2005.

Despite her incredible intellectual prowess and innumerable accolades, Dr. Vassallo remains remarkably humble and exceptionally approachable.  Stemming from Galveston, Texas, she radiates true, honest Southern hospitality.  An exemplary leader and humanitarian, Dr. Vassallo is an invaluable advocate for patients, students, and residents alike.  Not only does Susi encourage us to become better doctors, she motivates us to become better people.  Congratulations, Dr. Vassallo, on your well-deserved promotion, we are all so excited to celebrate your accomplishments.
