Resa speaks with Annals of EM editorial board members and authors Amy H. Kaji MD PhD and Richelle J. Cooper MD MSHS.  They critically analyze the article State of the Journal: Women First Authors, Peer Reviewers, and Editorial Board Members at Annals of Emergency Medicine

Amy Kaji, MD PhD is the Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor- UCLA and a Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. After obtaining her doctorate in epidemiology from the UCLA School of Public Health, Amy became a methodological statistical reviewer for Annals of Emergency Medicine, a methodological editor for JAMA Surgery, as well as one of the methodologists for the ACEP Clinical Policies Committee. Amy currently serves as Secretary-Treasurer for the SAEM Board of Directors and keeps herself busy by serving as one of the section editors for the Rosen’s textbook.

Richelle J. Cooper, MD, MSHS is the Research Director at the UCLA Department of Emergency Medicine, at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.  She is a professor of emergency medicine at the David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine, UCLA Emergency Medicine program. Dr. Cooper attended the UCLA School of Medicine, completed emergency medicine training at the UCLA emergency medicine program, and completed a research fellowship at the UCLA emergency medicine while obtaining her master’s of science in health services at the Jonathan Fielding UCLA School of Public Health. She is a methodology and statistics editor for the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

The impetus for the study came from Michael Callaham MD, the Editor-in-Chief as a focus of the February 2018 Annual Editorial Board Retreat. Amy shared that upon review of their editor-invited submissions, the proportion of ???? gender authors remained at the constant number of 30-31%. “It made me aware of areas where we as editors can do a better job of achieving more diversity and gender parity.”
