Bio

Dr. Welsford is a staff Emergency Physician at Hamilton Health Sciences, a Professor at McMaster University, and the Prehospital Fellowship Director at McMaster where she works extensively with undergraduate medical students, Emergency Medicine residents, and Prehospital Care Fellows. She is also the Medical Director for the Hamilton Health Sciences Centre for Paramedic Education & Research where she provides medical oversight for the “West” Region of Ontario, Canada including more than 1200 paramedics and nine Paramedic Services.

Dr. Welsford’s academic and research interests include prehospital and Emergency Department management of many acute conditions including: acute coronary syndromes, cardiac arrest, sepsis, and major trauma. Much of her recent work has focused on the continuum of care of STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction) patients from the field through to the hospital including implementation of the provincial paramedic and ED STEMI guidelines in partnership with the CCN in February of 2017. Additionally, she holds current peer-reviewed grants in paramedic sepsis recognition and in-hospital sepsis recognition and management.

Dr. Welsford has represented the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada to the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) for more than 10 years culminating in the 2005, 2010, and 2015 ILCOR Consensus on Science and Treatment Recommendations (COSTR). Most recently, she was the co-chair of the Acute Coronary Syndrome ILCOR Task Force authoring the 2015 ACS ILCOR COSTR and the 2015 HSFC/AHA ACS Guidelines. She is continuing this work as a contracted systematic reviewer and ALS Task Force member for the new ILCOR continuous evidence evaluation.
