SGEM#178: Mindfulness – It’s not Better to Burnout than it is to Rust

Burnout is certainly a hot topic, and mindfulness has hit the front pages of the New York Times and Time Magazine, putting it front and center in the public eye. Burnout was a term coined by Herbert Freudenberger in 1974 (1). There are a number of ways to define burnout but one of the most widely known is by Maslach, known for the Burnout Inventory (MBI) Score. It has three components including emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced feelings of personal accomplishment (2). Some ACEP members know about the MBI as it has been available as part of the Wellness Booth at the ACEP Scientific Assembly for over 20 years.

Guest Skeptic: Dr. Diane Birnbaumer is a Senior Clinical Faculty at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA. She is also an Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

GEMCAST is one of the few podcasts run by a FemInEM! It is also the first podcast devoted to Geriatric EM. Dr. Christina Shenvi, the host, speaks with experts from a range of fields on practical approaches to common presentations such as hip fractures, pulmonary emboli, delirium, and chest pain. She has also addressed systems-based solutions for ways to geriatricize any ED.

In this featured episode: she talks with a palliative care physician about tips to provide better care for patients with terminal conditions or severe illness-related symptoms. By the year 2030, one in every four patients presenting to your ED will be age 65 or older. So while geriatric EM may not be as “hot” as critical care or trauma, our guess is that you’ll provide palliative care a lot more often than you’ll perform ED thoracotomies. Residency interviews can already be pretty stressful. But on top of that, what if you’re asked about your marital status? Or whether you plan on having kids during residency?

In this episode, Dr. Charlotte Wills, Residency Program Director at Highland EM in Oakland, CA, and Dr. Dara Kass (@darakass), Director of Undergraduate Medical Education at NYU and Editor-in-Chief of FemInEm.org, share their thoughts and research about gender and other forms of bias during residency interviews.
