{"id":17138,"date":"2019-03-14T07:00:59","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T12:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/feminem.org\/?p=17138"},"modified":"2019-03-13T21:31:35","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T02:31:35","slug":"i-am-not-a-feminist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/feminem.org\/2019\/03\/14\/i-am-not-a-feminist\/","title":{"rendered":"I Am Not a Feminist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I\u2019m a female, but I\u2019m not a feminist.&nbsp; You\u2019d never hear me say that being a woman is\ndifficult.&nbsp; Being a woman in medicine is\na different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How many times during a shift should I have to correct a\npatient for calling me \u2018nurse\u2019 when I just introduced myself as their\ndoctor?&nbsp; How many times should I be\nmistaken for cleaning staff or a technician?&nbsp;\nHow much time during my shift should I spend helping patients off of bed\npans and bringing them blankets before I correct them?&nbsp; Does it even matter?&nbsp; How should I feel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the years spent studying\u2014missing birthdays, weddings,\nand funerals\u2026putting my personal life on hold\u2014to become \u2018doctor\u2019 makes me feel\nlike it should matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s a reasonable number of times to have my authority\nchallenged, to be doubted, to be unreasonably questioned by my patients and\ntheir families, based on my gender and appearance?&nbsp; To introduce myself as \u201cDr. Buckingham\u2019 and\nin return be addressed by my first name?&nbsp;\nHow does a professional woman respond to these challenges?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Won\u2019t adversity make me stronger, more resilient?&nbsp; Maybe even a better clinician?&nbsp; Shouldn\u2019t I just \u2018suck it up\u2019 and learn to\novercome?&nbsp; These are core beliefs that\nhave been engrained in me, largely by the House of medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the pit I feel in the bottom of my stomach, in knowing\nthat my patient interactions are different than those of my male counterparts,\nmakes me question the House and its values, as well as my own.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am a female physician, who in the past would have cringed\nat being labeled a feminist.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how should I feel?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m a female, but I\u2019m not a feminist.&nbsp; You\u2019d never hear me say that being a woman is difficult.&nbsp; Being a woman in medicine is a different story.
