{"id":2876,"date":"2016-09-05T07:00:57","date_gmt":"2016-09-05T12:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/feminem.org\/?p=2876"},"modified":"2017-05-08T01:30:09","modified_gmt":"2017-05-08T06:30:09","slug":"5-ted-talks-lady-docs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/feminem.org\/2016\/09\/05\/5-ted-talks-lady-docs\/","title":{"rendered":"5 TED Talks for All Lady Docs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A curated collection of excellent talks by Jenny Beck-Esmay, MD and Teresa Chan, MD<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are countless fantastic TED Talks out there, making it easy to dive down a rabbit hole watching one great one after another. \u00a0We have compiled a list of five fantastic talks to get you started. \u00a0These talks focus on issues of female empowerment and happiness. \u00a0They also give some useful tips you may employ both at home and in the ED to improve your work and quality of life. \u00a0Take a look!<\/p>\n<p><b>Hanna Rosin: New data on the rise of women<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"723\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7ZymFMmpOa0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Thoughts\/Highlights:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanna Rosin is the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">co-founder of DoubleX, a women&#8217;s site connected to the online magazine Slate and the co-host of the NPR podcast Invisibilia. \u00a0In this talk, she describes what she sees as the current rise of women within society. \u00a0She comments on how previous movements advancing women were seen in the 1920s and 1960s and that these were lead by a passionate feminist agenda. \u00a0She argues that the advances we are seeing today are different because they are the result of the economic realities in which we live. \u00a0She argues that the manufacturing economy that previously dominated our culture has been replaced by a service economy that focuses on information and creativity. \u00a0A leader in this new economy requires a different skill set, one to which women are perfectly fit. \u00a0Watch the video to see if you agree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sheryl Sandberg: Why we have too few women leaders<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"723\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/18uDutylDa4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Thoughts\/Highlights:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheryl Sandberg (the CEO of Facebook) was made famous for her book <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/leanin.org\/book\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLean In\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which addresses the issue of women in the workplace. \u00a0In this talk she describes the disparity between males and females leaders. \u00a0This is also true in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/318\/7176\/91.full.pdf+html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.lww.com\/academicmedicine\/Abstract\/2011\/01000\/Gender_Differences_in_Academic_Productivity_and.19.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">academic medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0She provides 3 tips that she thinks can help women achieve leadership roles: \u00a01) Sit at the table; 2) Make your partner a real partner; 3) Don\u2019t leave before you leave. \u00a0Want to find out what these mean? \u00a0Check out this video to find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Amy Cuddy: Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"723\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ks-_Mh1QhMc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Thoughts\/Highlights:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Cuddy suggests that striking a confident pose can trick your brain into feeling more confident. \u00a0Although these body language cues have yet to be proven in arenas outside of the interview room (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/journals\/apl\/100\/4\/1286\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her research is on job interview performance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), these techniques might be useful for trainee or junior staff clinicians who sometimes feel themselves turning into shrinking violets. \u00a0\u2018Power posing\u2019 for 1 minute has been shown in her studies to affect the neuroendocrine system (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/pss.sagepub.com\/content\/21\/10\/1363.short\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elevating testosterone, decreasing cortisol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mel Robbins: How to stop screwing yourself over<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"723\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lp7E973zozc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Thoughts\/Highlights:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This video is by Ivy League trained lawyer and radio personality Mel Robbins. \u00a0In this talk she talks about the \u201cF\u201d word\u2026and how it is a barrier to achieving more.
