Biography

Rachel MacAskill, MD

Prior to residency, I had worked as a scribe and a medical student in county hospitals for several years and loved it, and my advisor told me that Emory/Grady was the best county hospital experience out there. I did an away rotation with Emory and saw that that was exactly right, and I knew there was nowhere else I would rather train. I loved seeing the way the faculty and staff take excellent care of the diverse and underserved patient population, while considering their social determinants of health alongside the medical treatment. A large part of my personal pursuit in medicine is to make a dent in healthcare inequities however I can, and I felt that working at Grady would provide me the opportunity to do just so, while learning from attendings who are doing that on a massive scale.

After residency I haven't decided yet if I want to pursue a fellowship, but regardless, I want to be a happy, well-rounded ER doctor with close relationships with friends and family, and a good social life balanced with personal wellness. I also want a mini long-haired dachshund ASAP, but not during residency. And maybe a house with a big porch.
