Dr. Carolyn Snider is a leader in emergency medicine, health equity, and violence prevention. She served as Chief of the Emergency Department (ED) at Unity Health Toronto – St. Michael’s Hospital (UHT-SMH) from 2019 to 2023 and continues to provide emergency care while leading research as a Scientist at the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions. She also holds key roles with the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians and recently founded Dr. Carolyn Snider Consulting & Education. As ED Chief, Dr. Snider oversaw clinical, educational, and research initiatives, staff well-being, and crisis response. She managed major events, including the 2019 Raptors championship parade, coordinating care for 270 patients following a shooting, and led critical COVID-19 response efforts, particularly for homeless and precariously housed individuals. A recognized leader in hospital-based violence intervention, Dr. Snider launched Canada’s first such program in Winnipeg in 2013 and continues to expand ED outreach initiatives at UHT-SMH. At MAP, she directs research focused on health equity, working alongside community partners, policymakers, and individuals with lived experience to co-design impactful solutions. Committed to advancing leadership diversity, Dr. Snider founded the Canadian Women Leaders in Emergency Medicine Workshop, addressing the gender gap in medical leadership. As a researcher, she has secured over $8.6 million in federal funding and continues to drive policy change through advocacy and media engagement.
