Jailyn Avila, MD, FACEP is a board-certified emergency medicine physician, educator, and advocate dedicated to advancing ultrasound education and promoting gender equity in medicine. A transgender woman, wife, and mother of three, she has built a career at the intersection of clinical excellence, digital education, and mentorship. During her residency, Jailyn, alongside her then-ultrasound director Ben Smith, co-founded 5minsono.com, a website dedicated to delivering concise, high-yield ultrasound education. This platform later evolved into Core Ultrasound, an expansive educational repository offering a diverse range of content, including short and long-form instructional videos, a clip bank, and comprehensive ultrasound courses. Since 2015, Jailyn has delivered over 400 lectures at national and international conferences, sharing her expertise with clinicians worldwide. She currently serves as core faculty at the UHS SoCal MEC Emergency Medicine Residency in Temecula, California, where she serves as Associate Ultrasound Director and Ultrasound Fellowship Co-Director. In these roles, she is committed to training the next generation of emergency physicians, emphasizing the integration of bedside ultrasound into clinical practice. Beyond her academic and clinical responsibilities, Jailyn is deeply engaged in the broader medical education community. She is a co-host of the Ultrasound GEL podcast, which critically reviews the latest ultrasound literature, and she serves as the Director of the Ultrasound Leadership Academy, helping to shape future ultrasound leaders. She has also been a longtime collaborator with EMRAP, contributing to some of the most widely consumed emergency medicine educational content. In addition, Jailyn is the Director of Digital Education for FemInEM, where she works to amplify voices and initiatives that advance gender equity in emergency medicine. Passionate about fostering inclusive and evidence-based medical education, she continues to push boundaries in both ultrasound innovation and advocacy for a more equitable healthcare system.
