Dr. Zachau brings over 25 years of experience in emergency medicine, prehospital care, and general practice. After stepping away from clinical work due to a rare muscle channelopathy, she now devotes her time to volunteer work and education in austere, mountain, wilderness, and disaster medicine. An active contributor to the field, Dr. Zachau has presented extensively at national and international conferences, including the Southern Hemisphere Alpine Conference, the International Snow Science Workshop, and the World Congress on Mountain and Wilderness Medicine. Her sessions often focus on avalanche rescue, accidental hypothermia, ECMO in remote settings, and the mental health of outdoor professionals. She has also led workshops on prehospital decision-making and determination of death in austere environments. Dr. Zachau has collaborated with organizations such as NZ LandSAR, NZ Police, the Mountain Safety Council, and St John Ambulance—most notably contributing to the development of clinical guidelines for managing accidental hypothermia in New Zealand. Please note: Dr. Zachau lives with a disability and will provide further details regarding mobility and accessibility upon request. While she volunteers her time for presentations, she does require travel and accommodation expenses to be covered.
