Implicit bias in medicine hinders women’s success, punishes them for having characteristics that are rewarded in men, and lauds men for being barely halfway decent human beings. All. The. Damn. Time. It’s pervasive and if you don’t think it’s that bad, sit down with a female colleague and ask her to tell you about the bias she experiences. This could take a while, so bring snacks. To better understand your own contribution to bias, take an implicit bias test at Harvard’s Project Implicit to realize exactly how much bias you have towards women, people of color, and more. You may need an adult beverage after that, so plan ahead.
