Congratulations to Dr. Angela Mills for winning the 2017 AWAEM Mid-Career Award!  This award is given to honor mid-career female faculty who have shown promise for significant career achievements in emergency medicine through research, education, service, advocacy, or administration, and/or who have worked to promote the role of women in academic emergency medicine.

Dr. Mills, MD is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She attended Temple University Medical School where she graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. Dr. Mills is a graduate and former Chief Resident of the Emergency Medicine residency program at the University of Pennsylvania. She became a faculty member immediately thereafter in 2003 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine in 2012. Dr. Mills serves as clinical mission leader for the Department and has oversight for clinical policies and procedures as well as many clinical programs and initiatives including ED patient flow, quality and safety, a 17-bed Emergency Department Observation Unit, disaster planning and preparedness, advanced practice provider program, clinical information technology, ED renovations, and clinical protocol development.

Dr. Mills has also maintained an active research career where she has focused on the evaluation, treatment and management of abdominal pain in the ED setting, emergency diagnostic imaging, and clinical operations. She has published over 85 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters and has received research funding from both federal agencies and industry.

Dr. Mills is strongly committed to education and her teaching at Penn has spanned undergraduates, medical students, residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers; in addition, she has been invited to deliver lectures and Grand Rounds at numerous national venues. She has served on numerous local and national committees and task forces and is currently a member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Board of Directors. Dr. Mills was recently awarded the Mid-Career Award from the Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.
